Why Wolves Howl at the Moon

By: Ethan Evan

The faint sounds thump thump, thump thump, the majestic stride of a grey wolf, he just picked up the smell of a wild black bear. He howled twice to the rest of his pack to signal that he picked up a sent, the race was on, jumping over logs, ducking under small trees. “Raven, fly ahead and tell me where the bear is,” Bob barked. “Got it,” Raven chirped. Raven quickly sored ahead and quickly spotted the large black bear galloping 100 yards away. The raven dove back down to Bob and said “He’s about 100 yards away.” After hearing that information it gave him a sudden boost of adrenalin with the pack close behind him. Finally the bear was in sight and he knew it was just a matter of time. After trailing the bear for half an hour the Bob managed to grab hold of a leg of the bear and slowed the bear down and then the rest of the pack quickly caught up and killed the bear.

After bringing the bear back to the cave they had to start a fire, get the correct piece of meat, cook the meat, and serve the meat all for Mother Nature. She was very rood the wolves, making them her slaves. The wolves would just quit helping Mother Nature but she could just destroy all the wolves in an instant. So the wolves were stuck with being slaves forever, or so they thought.

It was night time the only time the wolves weren’t being slaves to Mother Nature. “Man it’s a pretty full moon tonight,” Bob admitted. “It sure is,” Billy agreed. “I wish we could just reason with Mother Nature so we could have freedom” Joe whimpered. “Hey, that gives me an idea!” Bob exclaimed. “What is it?” Both Joe and Billy asked. Then bob called Raven. “What,” Raven asked. “Can you try and reason with Mother Nature,” Bob asked. “I’ll do my best,” Raven assured.

Later that night when the moon was shining high and bright in the sky Raven flew over to Mother Nature’s little house. “Hey, Mother Nature!” Raven squawked. “What,” She asked. “If we worship you every night by howling at every full moon will you give the wolves freedom?” Raven wishfully asked. “Um, ok but first you must catch me another bear,” Mother Nature Demanded. “Ok, we will get you that bear in an instant,” Raven chirped.

‘Hey guys! Guess what! If you howl at the moon every full moon and catch her one more bear than you guys are free!” Raven pride fully chirped. “Thanks Raven you’re the best!” Bob, Billy, and Jo barked. The next day the dog caught the biggest bear in the woods and happily served it to Mother Nature. After that the wolves run off to find a new cave to call home. Later that night there was a full moon and all the wolves stood on the highest hill in the area and howled their brains out.

Since that day forward wolves have been howling at the moon from that day forward. And that is the true story of why wolves howl at the moon.
